In‑Stream River Training (IRT)

In‑Stream River Training uses small in‑stream structures—such as cribs, groynes and funnels made from natural, locally sourced materials—to gently guide the river’s flow. This creates more natural flow dynamics, resulting in more stable riverbanks and healthier aquatic ecosystems.

Together with Waterschap De Dommel, we are now designing IRT measures for De Zandleij, which will be the first lowland location to apply this approach. During a recent field and study trip along some of the earliest IRT projects in Switzerland, Niels Werdenberg explained how interventions like micro‑groynes and flow‑guiding funnels have already led to more stable, natural riverbanks and improved ecological conditions.
